””He/she is not a philosopher who does not write poems and paints. Hence it is not without reason one says that to understand is to see fantasy creatures, and understanding is fantasy.” Giordano Bruno, an Italian philosopher from the renaissance, once said. The quote doesn’t necessarily have to be true for me to like it. In so many ways it explains the drive and essence of my artistry:
Heike Thiede
Using painting and sculpture and combinations of both I make installations consisting of colorful, interactive objects. The creatures in these scenes start talking to me while I make them. Our conversations become dialogues, stories, fables and poems. The texts carry more darkness, maybe to balance and give weight to the colorful installations, and are presented so they cannot be easily seen. The audience has to look for them and make an active decision whether to take part of them or not.”
”If I wear a mask so that I look like you
Creature wearing a human mask
If I learn to speak like you
If I observe you and learn how to move like you
If I become like you as much as I can
Then will you let me live?”
